Introduction
This website contains photographs of members of the Hungarian-American community of Franklin, Sussex County, New Jersey, probably taken in the 1920s and 1930s. They belonged to Stephen and Rose (Balint) Meszaros, long-time residents of Franklin who came to the United States in the early 1900s from Szilágyi (Svilojevo), Hungary, which is now situated in the Apatin municipality in the West Bačka District, Vojvodina province, Serbia. Stephen was born in 1876 in Topolya, today Bačka Topola in the North Bačka District of Vojvodina. He was the son of Ignatz Meszaros and Rosalia Csanyi. Rose was born in 1883 in Temerin, which today is in the South Bačka District of Vojvodina. Her parents were Ignatz Balint and Katherine Kelemen.
Both Stephen and his son, Stephen C. Meszaros, worked at the New Jersey Zinc Company mine in Franklin. We'd like to learn the identity of the people in the photographs, and find out if any of them are related to the Meszaros family. If you can help, please contact us.
